What is Title I?
The Title I Program is the oldest and largest federally funded educational program for K-12 students in the United States. It is part of the Every Student Succeeds Act, 2015 which went into effect on December 10, 2015. The program has been amended to read: “Title I-Improving the Academic Achievement of the Disadvantaged”. Its purpose is to ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and reach, at a minimum, proficiency on State and Local standards and assessments. Title I programs are designed with the belief that all children can master challenging content and complex problem-solving skills. The Congress of the United States recognizes that the most urgent need for educational improvement is in schools with high concentrations of children from low-income families.
Heller and North Lawn Elementary are both “school-wide” Title I schools. The Title I school wide program is designed to assist all students as they learn to read and solve mathematical problems. All teachers and paraprofessionals are highly trained in reading and mathematics. In both areas, some students will receive additional services from the teacher and/or paras. In the event that students are instructed for four continuous weeks by a teacher who does not meet the definition of “highly qualified” the parents will be notified by the school.
