Benefactor of Kansas’ first Promise program receives recognition for monumental gift to his community

(Neodesha, Kansas) March 12, 2020 – The donor of the Neodesha Promise Scholarship Program was honored today at the General Session of the House of Representatives for his monumental gift to the USD 461 Neodesha school district and community. The program was previously announced this past November to students, community members, media outlets and dignitaries from across the state.

The presentation was opened by Representative Joe Newland, also a Neodesha native who honored Mr. Ben Cutler and the Marilyn Cram Cutler Charitable Foundation. “Today, it is my pleasure to recognize this gentleman for his outstanding gift to the Neodesha school district and community,” Newland stated.

Representative Newland proceeded to provide eligibility requirements as well as the opportunity that the Promise holds to stimulate the Neodesha economy. “From small business start-ups, renewed housing development, and community revitalization – these are just a few of the possibilities that the Promise program will stimulate,” Newland added.

Mr. Cutler and Mr. West, USD 461 High School Principal, both accepted the House of Representatives Certificate of Recognition alongside other Promise team members including Dennis Depew,

President of the Neodesha High School Alumni Association Scholarship Fund; Valon Jones, Scholarship Committee Member and CTE Coordinator; Pattie Bailey, Program Administrator; Don Adams, Advisory Board Member; Erica Johnson, Public Relations Coordinator; and Becky Cutler, Scholarship Committee Member.

The ceremony concluded with a statement of gratitude and appreciation to the Neodesha Promise founder. “Thank you, Ben, for your generous endowment which will forever change the lives of Neodesha high school graduates and the community,” stated Representative Newland.

Neodesha is first community in Kansas to adopt a PromiseNet scholarship program which will provide every qualified Neodesha high school graduate the opportunity to attend any US Pell Grant approved college of their choice. Bachelor and Associate degree scholarships as well as technical certifications are all available to qualifying students who are on track to graduate from Neodesha High School and live within the USD 461 school district. Awards will be capped at the highest tuition at a Kansas public college for in-state students, which is currently the University of Kansas.
